Hands-on recommendations concerning COVID-19 and general ventilation systems

A good and healthy indoor air quality is more essential than ever. Correctly maintained, operated, and planned HVAC solutions are key – not least because of COVID-19.

Systemair’s customers highly value us providing correct and precise data throughout all our business processes. Accordingly, we refrain from any communication concerning COVID-19 that is not based on facts and widely agreed recommendations by academia, the Eurovent Association and its members, ASHRAE, or comparable respected bodies.

At this moment, Systemair can provide the following recommendations and hands-on advice for general ventilation applications. For hospitals, laboratories, swimming pools, and other types of critical environments, we recommend to closely monitor their own established guidelines and standards.

  1. Maintain HVAC system regularly, operate and plan it correctly
Our first recommendation is always applicable: Maintain, operate and plan any type of ventilation system properly while respecting established hygienic standards and operation manuals.

  2. Optimise ventilation
To ensure a continuous supply of fresh air while also diluting indoor air contaminants, most of the respected associations and studies recommend increased ventilation.

  3. Maintain minimum humidity levels
The right humidity level is important to minimize the spread of influenza viruses. It is being recommended to set the relative humidity level to optimally 50%, minimum 40% and not exceeding 60%.

To achieve our recommendations, this is what we advise to date:

Extend the operation time of the ventilation system, optimally run it 24/7.

  • Run ventilation units longer than the human presence in the building.
  • Turn on the unit earlier, leave it running for an extended period after occupancy.

Maintain minimum humidity levels.

  • During operating hours, maintain the usual temperature setpoint and set the relative humidity control to optimally 50%, minimum 40% and not exceeding 60%.
  • In case the room temperature setpoint is high: Lower the temperature setpoint but keep it in the occupants’ comfort zone to more easily reach the humidity setpoint.
  • During non-operating hours, run as during operating hours, but consider lowering the temperature setpoint even further.
  • In case your system cannot achieve recommended humidity levels, consider additional humidification in the system or room.

Increase the building’s ventilation rate by increasing the system’s volume flow rate.

  • While ensuring it does not interfere with reaching the recommended humidity level.

Adjust air volume controls.

  • If available, set an acceptable CO2 level recommended for your system in your controls.
  • The air volume will be lower when less persons are present. It is then easier to reach the desired relative humidity.
  • If no CO2 controls were available, keep the unit running on constant airflow.

Set recirculation according to operation mode.

  • During operation hours: Switch off recirculation.
  • During non-operation hours: Switch on recirculation mode, which makes it is easier to reach the desired relative humidity.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 spreads mainly through droplets. These, for instance, occur when someone coughs or exhales and releases droplets of infected fluid.

Most droplets fall on nearby surfaces and objects, such as racks, machine surfaces, telephones. People could catch COVID-19 by touching contaminated surfaces or objects, and then touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. If they are standing within 1m (around 3ft) of a person infected with COVID-19, they can catch it by breathing in droplets coughed out or exhaled by them. In other words, COVID-19 spreads in a similar way to flu.

As we are constantly gaining more knowledge about COVID-19, please visit websites of trusted organisations such as the WHO.

While our recommendations are based on the best available evidence and knowledge (including our own internal knowledge as one of the world’s leading HVAC manufacturers), the Systemair Group excludes any liability and is not responsible for any direct, indirect, incidental damages or any other damages that would result from or relate to the use of the information presented on this page.
