VDI6022-1 certified options for the entire range

The entire Geniox range of modular air handling units can be configured as a VDI 6022-1 certified unit using our selection software, SystemairCAD. Audits were performed by SYNLAB, an accredited third-party laboratory in Germany, which has issued the VDI 6022-1 test report and certificate.

One of the focus points of VDI 6022-1 is easy cleanability. The Geniox air handling unit design makes it possible for the operator to clean all parts of the unit. It is, for example, required that all surfaces are smooth and that there are no sharp edges or shapes where dirt can accumulate. This is just one of many areas which make Systemair Geniox units #HygienicByDesign.

Also, for all Geniox units, all models and subranges included, all plastic casing components in the airflow are ISO 846 certified in accordance with VDI 6022-1. This means that these components prevent fungal growth and do not deteriorate with the actions of bacteria and microorganisms. Additionally, the Geniox casing has a C4 corrosion resistance class (ISO 12944) as a standard feature. C4 is a high class which is recommended for industrial areas and coastal areas with moderate salinity, chemical plants, swimming pools, ship and boatyards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not every hygienic air handling unit is what it claims to be. It’s essential to ask the right questions when selecting a unit. We support you by answering frequently asked questions – both relating to Geniox, and hygienic AHU certification in general. 

  1. What does “hygienic” mean?
    Hygienic in relation to air handling units usually refers to a unit applied in the healthcare segment, such as cleanrooms and operating theatres in hospitals. Standards and certifications tend to be well established in this area, such as VDI 6022-1 and DIN 1946-4. 

    We believe that the term “hygienic” deserves to be rethought. The purpose of an air handling unit is to provide a healthy indoor climate. Therefore, all units should be hygienic by design - also concerning general ventilation applications such as schools and offices. At minimum, all materials should be hygiene-friendly and certified hygienic options should be available. 
     
  2. What is VDI?
    VDI is an abbreviation of Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (Association of German Engineers). VDI has devised a number of guidelines which have become a standard for engineering today. Read more about the organisation at www.vdi.de.

    An accredited certification according to VDI6022-1 guarantees that the product meets the market’s most stringent hygiene requirements. It also means that the product undergoes regular audits.

    Systemair's products are certified in accordance with the code of practice VDI 6022-1. VDI 6022 describes "indoor air technology, indoor air quality". The aim of VDI 6022 is to create healthy breathing air in buildings. This code therefore deals with the hygiene of ventilation and air conditioning systems and devices. The minimum goal is that the air released into the room is no worse than the air drawn in by the device or system. Air conditioning technology must not itself be a source of contamination.

    VDI 6022-1 specifically deals with ventilation and indoor air quality. It defines hygiene requirements for ventilation and air-conditioning systems and units (VDI Ventilation Code of Practice).

  3. What do you mean when you say that the entire Geniox range is "hygiene-friendly"?
    As a standard feature for all Geniox units, regardless of model or subrange, all plastic casing components in the airflow are ISO 846 certified in accordance with VDI 6022-1. This means that these components prevent fungal growth and do not deteriorate with actions of bacteria and microorganisms. 

    Additionally, the Geniox casing has a C4 corrosion resistance class (ISO 12944) as a standard feature. C4 is a high class recommended for industrial and coastal areas with moderate salinity, chemical plants, swimming pools, coastal ship and boatyards. 

  4. What does "in accordance with VDI 6022-1" mean?
    “In accordance with VDI6022-1” means that the unit can be configured according to this code of practice in the manufacturer’s selection software, e.g. SystemairCAD. For example, the unit has larger spaces to enable easy accessability, and drip trays are available in stainless steel.
     
  5. What does "VDI 6022-1 certified" mean?
    “VDI6022-1 certified” is roughly the same as "in accordance with". The major difference is that the selection software includes a dedicated function, which assists users to configure a unit in line with VDI 6022-1 definitions. It also monitors the hygienic conformity of a particular configuration.

    Assess whether your supplier can configure specific construction and material requirements as defined by VDI 6022-1. For example: Is the minimum demanded cleaning space selectable in the configuration? Does it fulfil required corrosion specifications? 
     
  6. Do VDI certified products undergo audits?
    VDI 6022-1 is a code of practice according to which accredited third-party certification bodies or individual auditors can perform audits. To maintain the certificate, VDI certified products need to undergo regular audits. Remember: VDI itself is not a certification body for VDI 6022-1. 
     
  7. Who has certified Geniox air handling units?
    We always recommend that you look beyond the logo or label you may find on a website or in a catalogue. Has the air handling unit been certified internally (self-declaration by a manufacturer), or by an accredited third-party?

    Modular Geniox air handling units undergo third party audits by SYNLAB in Germany, a European leader in clinical laboratory services. SYNLAB has issued the VDI 6022-1 test report and certificate.
     
  8. Which hygienic air handling unit certifications exist in Europe?
    The most established one in Europe is the Eurovent Certified Performance for Hygienic Air Handling Units, which is globally applicable. Then there are the aforementioned VDI 6022-1 and DIN 1946-1 codes and standards, which are mainly applied in Central Europe.

    In addition, you may find local certifications, such as HTM/SHTM in the United Kingdom, PZH Atest Higieniczny in Poland, and SWKI VA 104-01 in Switzerland (which is like VDI).
