Acknowledged hygiene standards, merged into a single certification programme with an easy-to-understand 3-star rating system
Eurovent Certification
Eurovent Certification offers a stringent certification module to certify hygienic aspects of AHUs for different applications as part of its globally recognised Eurovent Certified Performance programme for air handling units.
Launched in 2016, Eurovent HAHU combines the requirements of multiple hygienic standards (such as VDI6022-1, DIN1946-4, and HTM 03-01) in a single programme – ending the current patchwork of differing national and regional norms.
Next to simplifying hygiene specifications through a globally harmonised standard, the Eurovent HAHU programme addresses common specifier challenges with practical benefits:
Third-party assurance of hygienic performance
Quantified, rule-based certification without grey zones
Simplified specification for tendering, documentation and compliance
Reliable reference for IAQ compliance in regulated industries
Eurovent HAHU certification is organised in a three-level star system, clearly aligning each certification level with its intended application environments:
| Level | Typical Applications | Hygiene Standard Compliance |
|---|---|---|
| ⭐ Level 1 | Offices, schools, hotels | Basic hygienic performance |
| ⭐⭐ Level 2 | Hospitals (general), public buildings | Compliant with VDI 6022-1:2018 |
| ⭐⭐⭐ Level 3 | Operating theatres, pharma, cleanrooms, food processing | Compliant with VDI 6022-1:2018 and DIN 1946-4:2018 |
The higher the level, the more rigorous the requirements for drainage, materials, accessibility, sealing, filtration, and fan configurations — providing clarity and avoiding over- or under-specification.
A major revision of the HAHU programme has entered into force in 2025. It brings along several substantial improvements to strengthen hygiene performance and clarify certification boundaries:
Stricter compliance and full alignment with VDI 6022 and DIN 1946-4 for Level 2 and 3 units
No belt-driven fans permitted at Level 3 — only direct-drive systems allowed
Mandatory condensate trays for all humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and coolers
Improved accessibility through inspection windows, lights, and clearly defined IMC spaces
Differentiated filter requirements with ≥ ePM1 85% efficiency and dual filtration stages at Level 3
Component labelling and airflow direction marking mandatory at Level 3
Mandatory minimum effective filter area and casing strength classes (D2 or better)
Software integration controls — certified products must meet all criteria to show hygienic status in selection tools
Each requirement is either visually inspected during audits or verified through documentation, ensuring full traceability and reliability.
We want hygienic features to be more democratic and highlight that this should be the norm for all applications. All AHUs should be hygienic. This should be a requirement for any end user. After all, every person deserves to live in a building where the AHU and ducts are clean and without mould and dust. This first level of hygienic AHUs is here to reward those manufacturers who would have to provide hygienic for normal buildings such as schools and hotels.
President, Eurovent Certita Certification
The Eurovent HAHU certification includes annual audits by Eurovent Certita Certification (ECC) as an accredited third party.
ECC audits each factory regularly to ensure that the factory and manufactured products meet the desired quality level in line with the certification programme requirements.
ECC also audits the selection software of certified manufacturers, ensuring that the units you configure meet the hygienic requirements and levels defined in Eurovent’s HAHU programme.
All of this aligns with our and Eurovent's ambition to make hygienic AHUs the norm, rather than an exception:
A Hygienic AHU is an Air Handling Unit certified under Eurovent's Hygienic Option, which requires compliance with quantified and transparent criteria addressing the design, construction, and operational hygiene of the unit.
Certified units undergo a dual-level validation process — desk study and on-site audits — covering over 60 specific criteria outlined in Appendix H of Eurovent's AHU Certification Programme (ECP-05). These criteria go beyond typical performance metrics and ensure compliance with relevant hygiene standards like VDI 6022-1:2018 and DIN 1946-4:2018.
Eurovent Certita Certification’s Hygienic AHU Programme is the only independently verified certification in the market that offers:
Clear and measurable criteria (Appendix H, ECP-05)
Annual surveillance audits and desk studies
Seamless software integration – products only show as certified if all hygiene requirements are met
Standardised documentation for audits and client communication
International recognition and trust
Our global flagship range of AHUs was designed in line with our #HygienicByDesign principles. When selecting any Geniox model, you can thus be ensured that hygienic requirements are part of the unit’s standard offering. In addition, any unit can be configured as a Eurovent-certified HAHU with different levels.
