Custom components, expert coordination, and low-noise design for a seamless integration into a heritage-protected site
Cinema Stuttgart, Germany
Due to the requirements of the preservation order, the entire installation had to be carefully executed despite the constraints posed by narrow doorways. To meet these challenges, the ventilation units were partially delivered in individual components and partially customised and adapted to ensure they could pass through the restricted access points and be installed within the limited space of the plant rooms.
The individual elements of the KA ventilation units and the various sub-components of the Geniox-Core ventilation units were only installed on site. In addition to a large team of ventilation fitters, Systemair's foreman and technical sales representative Dennis Santagati were also present to supervise the installation. Flexibility, experience and the ability to find new solutions contributed to the success.
Systemair succeeded in reducing the sound level of the ventilation units to an absolute minimum through forward-looking planning, so that nothing stands in the way of enjoying a film and, above all, optimum acoustics in the cinema.
3 KA units and 3 Geniox Core AHUs
The historic cinema in Stuttgart is an architectural gem, protected under heritage regulations to preserve its character for future generations. At the same time, it was essential to equip the building with state-of-the-art ventilation systems to meet modern comfort and energy efficiency requirements.
However, the structure posed significant challenges. Narrow doorways and confined technical rooms demanded meticulous planning and innovative engineering. As a result, the entire design approach had to be rethought. Custom dimensions and specially adapted components were developed, and the ventilation units were delivered in multiple parts to accommodate the building’s spatial limitations.
To comply with monument protection requirements and the building’s limited access points, the ventilation units were precisely tailored to fit through narrow doorways and into tight plant rooms. Appliance dimensions were carefully adjusted in advance, with units designed to be installed upright to allow easier access to components for future maintenance.
Installation was carried out entirely on site by the Systemair team, working closely with ventilation fitters from SLK and the project foreman. Their experience, flexibility, and attention to detail ensured a smooth integration despite the complex conditions.
The project saw the installation of 6 ventilation units: The unit size of the 6 ventilation units varied between 1,500 -10,000 cubic metres of air per hour.
Geniox Core 16: for cinema 1 (delivered in 3 parts)
Geniox Core 14: for cinema 2 (delivered in 3 parts)
Geniox Core 14: for the lobby
The KA units were installed in the narrow, tube-like technical room and had to be positioned in such a way that maintenance work could also be carried out without any problems. The heat exchanger was supplied in individual parts.
All ventilation units are equipped with the Systemair control system!
1x KA unit 2-3 for the foyer
1x KA unit 2-1 for cinema 3 (library)
1x KA unit 2-2 for the café
1x Geniox-Core 16 for cinema 1
1x Geniox-Core 14 for cinema 2
1x Geniox-Core 14 for the lobby
The units used have highly efficient PWW heating registers and DX registers for precise, energy-optimised temperature control - perfectly tailored to the special requirements of modern cinemas.
Powerful fans were also installed on the top floor to ventilate the washrooms, project rooms and technical areas. Safety-relevant components such as fire protection evaluation modules and other ventilation units were also used.
It was a pleasure to collaborate with SLK on developing the ventilation concept for this exceptionally beautiful and historically significant building. Through close cooperation with all project partners, we were proud to contribute our expertise and support every phase of the process. Together, we successfully delivered a technically demanding custom solution to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.
A heartfelt thank you to all our colleagues whose dedication and active involvement played a vital role in the project’s success.
