Showcasing how specialised air solutions can be hygienic and sustainable

Systemair delivers an extensive and specialised product range to ensure the most hygienic air quality levels without sacrificing energy-efficient operation

National Health Laboratory, Qatar

The National Health Laboratories of Qatar embodies the state’s strong focus on actively raising the quality and standards of the healthcare sector in the Middle East region. Below were critical considerations that contributed to the design:

  • site integration concerning the master plan and climatic conditions,

  • functional distribution to achieve optimum spatial use,

  • outstanding architectural design that gives the building its iconic façade, and

  • a comfortable and friendly working environment.

Systemair supplied hygienic products and solutions to secure the highest air quality and comply with stringent requirements of a world-class healthcare facility.

3-star
GSAS

The National Health Laboratory meets the 3-star Global Sustainable Assessment Scheme (GSAS) level. GSAS is the first performance-based system in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, developed for assessing and rating buildings and infrastructure for their sustainability impacts.

Specialised products meeting higher-than-standard requirements

The project had special mechanical engineering requirements to avoid cross-contamination and features a complex architectural layout accomodating the hazardous laboratories. There was a requirement for a specialised product range, including fans for aggressive media and Eurovent-certified hygienic AHUs.

Overcoming challenging designs

Understanding space and its management were vital to ensuring that the building’s complex lab infrastructure, including pipe and duct systems, was fully coordinated with the architectural and structural design.

Technical support and cooperation

The National Health Laboratory is the first government project involving air handling units for Systemair, requiring strict and challenging approvals. The project benefited from solid after-sales and technical support from local and global factories

How it all began

The National Health Laboratory of Qatar was designed to be a place of innovation and incubation of new ideas, set apart by its modern design, modularity, and the complex designs of hazardous laboratories. The space features divisions for Food Safety Lab Chemistry, FS Lab Microbiology, FS Lab Radiation, FS Lab for Water, Drug and Safety Lab, DPCS, Environmental Health and Protection Lab, Reference Standards and Testing, and BSL3.

Each division had a similar standard room layout optimised to suit the needs of critical laboratory requirements, which can be expanded through the combination of modules. The flexible modular design is underpinned by a crucial focus on preventing cross-contamination between different departments without disrupting the workflow of integrated facilities.

Demanding engineering

The project, led by Focus Design Partners, is one of the first labs in Qatar to use building information modelling (BIM). The client, architect, engineers, and contractor are all responsible for project development, coordination and stakeholder engagement.

Highest ventilation requirements for medical factility

Several factors made the project especially challenging to meet higher-than-usual standards. The architectural design divides the spaces into departments depending on the functioning and connection restrictions between laboratories.

Being a critical healthcare facility, the project demanded the highest quality ventilation solutions that comply with relevant codes, offer reliable operations, and withstand the region’s conditions.

Unique requirements for hazardous exhaust

The Mechanical Engineering Design was challenging due to the requirement for hazardous exhaust and speciality gas requiring unique piping systems, the building needed denser-than-usual ceiling cavities. This required constant coordination between designers and engineers to avoid clashes and ensure that systems routing meets the project’s high design and performance aspirations.

Complex building architecture

Understanding space and its management were crucial for ensuring that the building’s complex lab infrastructure, including pipe and duct systems, was fully coordinated with the architectural and structural design.

The project was also incredibly challenging, being the first government project for air handling units for Systemair, which required stringent and demanding approvals.

Certified hygienic AHUs

Systemair had an advantage over other bidders owing to its specialised product range, as the laboratory project had specific requirements for fans for aggressive media. The Systemair team also highlighted the benefits of the Eurovent-certified hygienic AHUs to Ashghal and its ability to provide the highest quality indoor climates in an energy-efficient manner. The project also benefited from Systemair’s after-sales and technical support.
